August 1, 2006 - Entry #1 - Why Blog?
The Context Of This Web Log
Piet Hein was a major Danish figure in the 20th century. Known as the “poet with a slide rule,” he was often in the headlines because of his quintessential Danish ideas and inventions. My father was an engineer who loved his poems and his designs. As a child I grew up playing with one of Piet Hein’s “super-eggs” and studying his many books of pithy verse known as Gruks - mostly because the cartoon-like images that went along with the poems were appealing to children… One of his lines bubbled up from my memory as I was struggling with my motives for beginning this blog:
At vide hvad man ikke ved, er dog en slags al videnhed.
My non-rhyming translation: To know what you don’t know, is afterall a form of omniscience.
I have reached the age where what I know is that I don’t remember even the things I want to remember… so in the spirit of Gruks I hope this site will serve as a sort of “content management system” for the memories of Henrik Kibak.
Piet Hein also wrote:
The Noble Art of Losing Face
May one day save the human race
And turn into eternal merit
What weaker minds would call disgrace.
An art I like to think that I have perfected
